Whiskey #3 puppy passed away suddenly March 11, 2015 |
It is with great sadness that I write this email this morning to let you all know of Whiskey's passing yesterday March 11th, 2015. She was Red Collar baby #3 born simultaneously with Hank #4 at apx 5:10 am on December 13th, 2009. Kathi and her family are trying their best to deal with her tragic loss. She became lethargic and unable to stand up yesterday in the afternoon and had not been eating well about 48 hours earlier. This was attested to a weekend trip to North Carolina. Kathi thought that the stress of the trip had attributed to her lack of appetite. When Kathi arrived at the vet Whiskey was unable to walk. She had a blood panel run as Kathi originally feared Leptospirosis. The veterinarian let her know that her red blood cell count was 13 as opposed to 39-60 which is the normal level in a healthy dog. At this point Whiskey was already in renal failure and her kidneys were shutting down. The veterinarian said that the kindest thing to do would be to help Whiskey to the bridge as the damage to her liver and kidneys was irreversible. We have started a petcaring account in Whiskey's name with the hope to start a foundation fund of all of our previously adopted dogs and we would like her family to be the first recipients of the fund. If you could find it in your heart to donate any small amount, it would be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. We are also trying to raise a little more so that we can get a personalized gift for their family to help them during their time of grief.

The Sickles 4 Pack with Santa 2013
Another year has gone by and it is time at the Sickles house to reminisce and count our many blessings that began with Bella four years ago. November 4th, 2009 I arrived home to Bella basically sitting in Luke's lap. She greeted me like she knew me forever. I loved her from that moment on and she was best bed buddy (great spooner / bed hog), and companion.
To recap:
The weekend after Thanksgiving after we arrived home from our holiday trip to NY, we felt movement in her belly. So at her appointment (on Nov 30th) to receive her final H3N8 vaccine, we did x-rays and counted to 12-14 skeletons (looked like lizards but their x-ray machine was not large enough for a dog of her size nor was it digital and good quality). This meant we only had about 18 days to prepare AT MAX. She delivered 13 in 15 days. That milestone date is approaching!!! Check out the Skeletons (see Bella's story)!!!
Also on these dates, November 20, 2010, Levi came back to he ol' homestead for good. The next day (Nov 21) we took him to get his pictures with Santa.
The following year, November 19, 2011, Boomer came back home to stay. On Nov. 20 we had their pictures taken with Santa.
So it has become a tradition to get pictures taken with Santa on this anniversary and helping us to celebrate all we have to be thankful for.
We have one another (ailments and all) we see our beloved Santa (same one two years in a row). He is a disabled veteran and we have grown to love him and vice versa. As you can imagine, when you venture out with 4 beasts dressed up for a photo shoot, the event is memorable for everyone! We don't know what tomorrow brings and want to treasure every opportunity to make photo memories with Bella, Gunther, Levi and Boomer. We simply don't want to take time with them for granted! Bella is 7 and our babies are turning 4 in a few weeks. Senior citizenship and middle age! Cherish the moments!!!!

3rd Anniversary
3 years ago, January 24th, 2010 Bella's Baker's Dozen had their six week pictures taken to be posted for adoption.
Christmas photo with Santa 2012
This has become a tradition now. When Levi came back to roost they had their pictures taken with Santa. So it was only natural for us to do it with Boomer when he came back home in Nov 2011. Why should this year be anything different? We should be celebrating that NO MORE came home! Right!!! However, I couldn't locate the Santa we had for the first two years. So I hunted down an authentic Santa (real beard, wears glasses, looks like Santa on the street) and met him prior to "the" day and warned him ahead of time. The photographer is a pet photographer and had taken pictures of Bella and Gunther for Halloween once. He is awesome. I gave him advanced notice too. We didn't know EVERY human is crazy about their pets and is willing to wait in line for an hour to be the first five so they can get a free picture frame for their 5 x 7! Go figure! But the kids were well behaved despite the wait. They were reasonable with Tom's requests (to a point) but ultimately, they really do make most of the decisions regarding their poses. Most of the time they do a bang up job!
Happy 3rd Birthday - Bella's Baker's Dozen
Three years ago, at 3:30 in the morning Bella delivered her first puppy outside into my hands. Neither she or I had any experience birthing puppies but with the help of Luke (lots of farm experience) we got through it all.
We have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving 2012
Two years ago Levi came back to us on Nov. 20th and last year Boomer came back to our home Nov 19th. The pups are all so different but truly so are we because of their presence in our lives. I truly was rescued by Great Dane Bella. My life is not the same as it was before Bella - that's for sure. It will never be that way again - I will never be that person again. I am forever changed because of this litter of puppies and their extended families.
Happy Howl-i-days to our puppy family.
Our family has grown yet again….. +1 = Boomer, Aqua, #8, has returned.
Sickles Family of Danes 2011.
Same Santa as last year when Levi was returned. Levi was returned Nov 20 picture taken Nov 21. This year Boomer was returned Nov 19 and picture was taken Nov 20th. The Santa and his cronies all remember us and our well behaved dogs.
They said they love our dogs and our story so much they have considered using our photos for their advertising.
Hey check out Levi - look at his feet, he is sitting on the bench right next to Santa. He remembered Santa from last year. Boomer was falling over in the picture. This was his first official Santa photo. So he was not quite sure what to do. He did well with all the stimuli around.

Happy Holidays 2010 from the Sickles Pack
Our family has grown from two Great Danes to three. Levi came back to his birthplace.
Rather than try to rehome him we have decided to keep him with his original family.
We love them all!
